Federal prosecutors say a Mississippi man is sentenced to a year in federal prison for a beating at Fort Polk. They say 23-year-old Justin Corey Thurston of McLain, Mississippi pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-wife and striking a man in the head with a baseball bat last September. Thurston’s sentence also includes three years of supervised release.

Louisiana’s Annual Sales Tax Holiday begins today. Over the next two days, the 4% state sales tax on the first 25 hundred dollars of each item a customer buys will be waived.
