Terrebonne Parish officials began a chlorine burn of the Schriever Water System in Montegut after the discovery of the brain eating amoeba. The Department of Health and Hospitals confirm the presence of the Naegleria Fowleri amoeba in the system that serves about 97,000 people in the Houma area. Health officials advise residents to avoid getting water up their nose, but say the water is safe to drink. A 60 day chlorine burn ensures the elimination of the amoeba from the system.
