A Grambling State University student traveling at a high rate of speed is dead, and another student injured following a crash near campus. Witnesses said the driver over-corrected, flipped multiple times and burst into flames. Twenty-one year-old Carl Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger 23 year-old Arceneau Robinson was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition.

An impaired driver in West Carroll Parish crashing into another car on Highway 2 last night has claimed the life of a North Carolina woman. State Police say that 43 year-old James Bell of Oak Grove crossed the center line in his F-150 truck, striking the car driven by 22 year-old of NorthCarolina. His passenger, Lydia Snyder, was prounounced dead at the scene.

With President Obama restoring diplomatic relations with Cuba, some people are blasting the decision, saying it could be dangerous for Americans with a proposed prisoner exhange. George Fowler, Vice Chairman of the Cuban-American National Foundation is against it, although he does admit the one befefit of being able to get Cuban cigars.

Some members of LSU ‘s faculty and student body are concerned the American Family Association is involved in a prayer rally at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on January 23rd. Jeff Palermo has the story:

The Jeanerette Police Department says they are investigating the death of a man they believe was shot and killed by his juvenile son. They say the 57-year-old was pronounced dead Tuesday night and they are still working to determine if the incident was an accident. The case is under investigation.

Out of West Carroll Parish: State Police say a 43-year-old man is charged with vehicular homicide after crashing head on into a car — killing a passenger in that vehicle and seriously injuring a 5-year-old in his truck. They say James Bell of Oak Grove crossed the centerline on Highway 2 and hit 22-year-old Gabriel Snyders car and her passenger Lydia Snyder of North Carolina died. LSP says Bell was impaired and also faces two counts of negligent injury.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a Mississippi man has been cited for allegedly drowning a deer in the Mississippi River in Concordia Parish. Adam Einck with L-D-W-F says a witness observed 40-year-old David Hayes of Natchez, Mississippi, drive his boat up to a deer swimming in the river…:

Hayes admitted to drowning the deer on the Louisiana side. He faces fines and up to 90 days in jail if convicted.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s office says a woman is dead and a man is in critical condition after a shooting last night in Terrytown. Authorities say a store clerk saw a man get out of a vehicle then collapse in front of the store. Officers discovered a woman lying in the back floorboard with several gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The annual University of Michigan “Monitoring the Future” report shows, for the first time, more teens are smoking e-cigarettes than tobacco cigarettes. Scott Carwile reports…:

A fiery single vehicle crash in the city of Grambling leaves one man dead and another seriously injured. Authorities believe 21-year-old Carl Robinson of Tallulah was racing with another friend when he lost control of his vehicle, ran off the roadway and flipped several times before bursting into flames. Robinson was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was pulled to safety and is in serious condition.

Six Rapides Parish elementary schools will receive a techlology grant from the Apple Corporation. Apple’s ConnectED program, in partnership with The White House, provides new technology to schools where at least 96% of students are eligible for the free or reduced price lunch program. This grant will provide an iPad for every student, a Macbook for each teacher, and an Apple TV for every classroom. Only 114 schools nationwide recieved the Apple ConnectED grant.

A New Orleans educator is under arrest after allegedly sending pornographic images to students. New Orleans Police say 32-year-old Da’Mon Williams, a music teacher at Sophie B. Wright Charter School, is accused of sending explicit photos to four students. Williams faces two counts of prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and student and two counts of indecent behaviour with a juvenile. School officials say Williams has been suspended.

According to a new national survey, for the first time more teens are smoking e-cigarettes than tobacco cigarettes. DHH Health Promotions Director Caroline Brazeel says it’s important that the state does what it can to protect the health of the youth in Louisiana. She says the Louisiana Legislature took a critical first step in trying to combat this growing trend…
