It took less than 24 hours for the Louisiana Supreme Court to react to Attorney General Liz Murrill’s Orleans Parish indictment. The state’s highest court issued an emergency stay early this morning, which means the 16-count indictment handed down yesterday has been put on hold.

An Orleans Parish grand jury charged Murrill with malfeasance and intimidation for letters she sent in May to New Orleans city officials threatening their possible removal from office if they continued to usurp a state law that combined the city’s criminal and district clerk of courts.

Following the indictment, District Judge Leon Roche (Ro-shay) issued a warrant for Murrill’s arrest, setting bail at 400-thousand dollars. Murrill’s attorney, Laura Rodrigue, called the bail amount excessive…

Governor Jeff Landry has ordered the State Police to investigate the alleged improprieties of the grandy and those who ran it. We do know that grand jury return was done behind closed doors, when state law requires they must be done in open court.

That’s Louisiana Highway Safety Commission spokesperson Greg Fischer who says Louisiana averages between five and ten fatalities during the Fourth of July holiday period due to impaired driving.

Officials have broken ground on a new 43-million dollar Health Education Campus at L-S-U-Alexandria.  The dean of the College of Health and Human Services at LSU-A, Doctor Ryan Riche (REE-shay) says the facility will significantly increase the university’s capacity to educate nurses and allied health professionals, while providing a huge economic boost to the region…

An Orleans Parish grand jury has handed down a 16-count felony indictment against Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stemming from letters she sent to New Orleans officials in May over the consolidation of the Orleans Parish civil and criminal district courts. In the letters, Murrill said Mayor Helena Moreno and other elected individuals could be removed from office if they continued to push for a special election to name an interim clerk, which the state argued was not needed. Special Prosecutor Laurie White says Murrill broke Louisiana’s law that prohibits public intimidation and retaliation.

Murrill faces eight counts of public intimidation and eight counts of malfeasance in office. The attorney representing Murrill, Laura Cannizzaro Rodrigue, says the elected officials who received the letters violated the state’s usurper laws by defying a newly-passed law approved by state lawmakers, and the state’s highest court backed her position.

The Louisiana Supreme Court blocked the special election and ordered Chelsey Richard Napoleon to serve as consolidated clerk as required by state law.

The indictment of Murrill is the latest in a growing rift between leaders in New Orleans and Governor Landry and his attorney general.

White says Murrill was trying to intimidate the public officials with her letters.

Murrill’s bond was set at 400-thousand dollars — 25-thousand dollars for each felony count. Rodrigue believes that’s excessive.

Governor Jeff Landry said Murrill was indicted by a kangaroo grand jury and added that the criminal justice system is a circus at its finest in Orleans. He says he’ll pardon her as fast the law allows.

The LSU Tigers are a month away from their first fall camp under new head coach Lane Kiffin. Kiffin has welcomed 39 new players from the transfer portal, including three of the top ten-rated portal prospects. Tiger Rag Editor Glenn Guilbeau says expectations are high given the talent in Baton Rouge.

Top transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt will lead the offense. The LSU offense ranked last in the SEC in total yards and rushing yards last season. Guilbeau credits the struggle to an underperforming offensive line, which Kiffin has revamped this offseason.

The Tigers welcomed Ole Miss interior lineman Devin Harper and Colorado tackle Jordan Seaton, who was named a Walter Camp Preseason All-American.

Third-year defensive coordinator Blake Baker returns four starters from a unit that ranked in the top half of the SEC in total and scoring defense. Former All-SEC linebacker Whit Weeks will hold down the middle of the field, while corners D.J. Pickett and P.J. Woodland join safety Tamarcus Cooley on the backend. With the addition of Boise State safety Ty Benefield, a no-fly zone is brewing in Baton Rouge.

A survey done by the American Farm Bureau Federation found the average cookout for ten this year will cost around $73.82 – that’s up about four-percent from last year. Federation Economist Faith Parum says the most expensive items are the meats – two pounds of beef will run you around 14 dollars.

Many families will be spending time at the pool this Fourth of July weekend. The Louisiana Department of Health is urging you to make an extra effort in keeping everyone safe. Health Secretary Bruce Greenstein (green-steen) says you can never take too many precautions with kids.

And of course, Saturday is the Fourth of July, and Romig says a city that knows how to throw a party has a spectacular fireworks show on the riverfront planned to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday. 

The Louisiana Department of Health is urging you to make sure that all kids are safe at pool parties this Fourth of July weekend. Health Secretary Bruce Greenstein says swimming pools need to be supervised at all times.

Fox 8 Television in New Orleans is reporting that an Orleans Parish grand jury has indicted Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill. It’s unknown what criminal charges Murrill will face. It’s been reported a grand jury was looking into whether Murrill violated state law by threatening to possibly remove New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno, five city council members and Orleans DA Jason Williams from office if they kept interfering with a state law that eliminated the city’s criminal clerk of court position and consolidated the office with the civil clerk. Eventually Louisiana Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state and the two offices were combined.

Louisiana has a new King of Seafood, Lafayette chef Kris Allen. The Executive Chef at Pamplona Tapas Bar and Restaurant won the Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off earlier this week. Allen says Louisiana seafood is the best to cook with.

It’s a big tourism weekend for New Orleans as the city is hosting the Essence Fest. Mary Beth Romig with New Orleans and Company says the city is also hosting the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice. Romig says those two conferences are helping to contribute to a projected hotel occupancy of more than 80-percent tomorrow and Saturday night.

Lafayette chef Kris Allen is this year’s winner of the Louisiana Seafood Cook-off. He impressed the judges last weekend with his crab-stuffed flounder which the public can try at his restaurant in Lafayette, Pamplona Tapas Bar and Restaurant. Allen will now spend the next year promoting Louisiana seafood on the national stage…

He will also compete in the Great American Seafood Cook-off in New Orleans on July 25^th.

The Louisiana Department of Health is reminding families about the importance of water safety during this holiday weekend. According to the latest statistics, 55 children drowned in Louisiana between 2022 and 2024. LDH Secretary Bruce Greenstein urges families to enroll children in swimming lessons at an early age and adults who do not know how to swim, should also take lessons if they are going to be around water…

A 7-year-old girl in Addis died following a domestic disturbance last night. Police responded to reports of an unresponsive child and rushed her to the local children’s hospital. Detectives learned a physical altercation had taken place just before the medical emergency. A woman was also injured in the incident, and a man believed to be involved has been identified.

Triple-A projects more than 61-million travelers to hit the road nationwide this Fourth of July Weekend. Gas prices are at a four-year high for this time of year, coming in at 3.46-a-gallon in Louisiana, but Don Redman with Triple-A Louisiana says that won’t deter travelers.

Triple-A says if you haven’t left already, you can expect heavy traffic in the afternoon and early evening hours. If you’re heading out tomorrow, try to leave before 11 a.m. to avoid the most congestion.
