Governor Edwards vetoes the session’s signature tort reform bill that proponents argue would lower auto insurance rates in Louisiana by at least ten percent. The legislation was a GOP priority this year and easily passed both the House and Senate but did not secure a veto-proof majority in either. Edwards has attacked the effort saying it does not address the real roots of our high premiums and it undercuts injured victims in court.

A long-standing Mardi Gras tradition is being canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19. The event started off as just a cocktail party and a way for the Louisianan congressional delegation to celebrate Mardi Gras away from the Bayou State. Senior Lieutenant with Mystick Krewe of Louisianans Tyron Picard says while it is disappointing to see the event be canceled, the focus now shifts to 2022.

Four children and two adults are dead following a murder-suicide in Monroe. Police Chief Reggie Brown identified the shooter as 30-year old Britney Tucker. Tucker’s four children were killed, ages ranging from 6 months to 12 years. Police say the second adult victim 20-year Anteshia Logwood was shot in parking lot outside of Tucker’s apartment before Tucker took the lives of her four children and then her own. Brown says Tucker had history of mental illness and they are investigating how she obtained a firearm.

Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy says the movement for defunding police a stupid idea. Cassidy says the focus should be on police reform and allocating more dollars towards mental health programs so that officers have fewer encounters with mentally ill individuals. But he admits this is not an overnight solution…

A long-standing Mardi Gras tradition in the nation’s capital is being canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19.  Senior Lieutenant with Mystick Krewe of Louisianians Tyron Picard says the event features Louisiana’s biggest movers and shakers in D.C. for three days of politicking and celebrations. Picard says the 76-year event has only seen cancellations three other times.

Monroe Police are investigating a murder-suicide that’s claimed six lives. Witnesses tell Monroe Police Chief Reggie Brown the suspect 30-year old Brittany Tucker had experienced mental health issues for years. The first shooting took place last night in the parking lot of Parkview Apartments, the victim 20-year old Antiesha Logwood. Then another shooting in Tucker’s apartment, claiming the lives of her four children, ages range from 6 months to 12 years. Then police say Tucker took her own life.

Iconic French Quarter bars are set to reopen at 25 percent capacity Saturday as New Orleans enters Phase Two reopening. A veteran bartender says patrons must observe strict social distancing and must wear masks while inside bars or we could see super spreading incidents like other countries.

Phase Two requires patrons to space out six feet away from other groups and calls for setting up tables for patrons to be served at like a restaurant.

Legislation creating the framework to tax online fantasy sports passes a House committee and is headed to the House floor. The bill sets an eight percent tax rate on net revenue for the activity and mandates those funds must be spent on early childhood education. New Orleans Representative Jason Hughes applauded it.

Boyd Gaming is laying off a reported 15-hundred workers at their five casino properties in Louisiana. The five locations are Sam’s Town Hotel and Casino in Shreveport, Treasure Chest in Kenner, Amelia Belle in St. Mary Parish, Delta Downs in Vinton and Evangeline Downs Racetrack. These locations lost an estimated 70-million dollars in March and April.

The state reported 19 more COVID-19 deaths yesterday, bringing the state’s death toll to 2,874. Cameron, Tensas, Sabine, LaSalle and East Carroll are among the parishes that have yet to report a COVID-19 death.

We are waiting more information from the Monroe Police Department on a murder-suicide involving a mother and multiple children at the Parkview Apartment complex. The number of people shot and fatalities is unknown.
