Governor Edwards says he is concerned about the funding mechanism for the new round of federally enhanced weekly unemployment benefits. Edwards was alarmed that the benefit is being funded by FEMA emergency relief funds during hurricane season.

The state now reports over 100,000 people are deemed to have recovered from COVID-19, which leaves about 26,000 known active cases in the state after Louisiana reports another 1,200 new cases.

As many as 200,000 Louisianans on unemployment could be ineligible to receive the new 300 dollar federally enhanced weekly benefits. Workers must receive at least 100 dollars a week in state benefits to qualify for the 300 extra. Governor Edwards says that’s only about half of all state unemployment beneficiaries…

A spokesperson for Senator Bill Cassidy told The Advocate that people receiving under 100 dollars a week from the state could get a prorated cut of the 300 dollar federal benefit.

Presidential candidate Joe Biden announced the selection of Kamala Harris as his running mate yesterday for the November election. Baton Rouge Representative Ted James was involved with Harris’s campaign while she was still a Democratic challenger and says the selection is no surprise to him.

Brumley says they have received a few concerns already.

A statewide manhunt is on for Taniel Cole, who accused of shooting a man in the leg at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – St. Mary Medical Center. Shreveport Police say the suspect made threats to kill any law enforcement officer or any others who tried to stop him today and believe he may have left the facility by foot or by a vehicle. Residents in the area are asked to stay in their homes. Cole is considered armed and dangerous.

Billioux says the length of time the ailment can impact a child varies depending on the severity of the case.

After months of lobbying the crawfish industry will be included in the federal Coronavirus Food Assistance Program aimed at helping food producers impacted by the pandemic. Congressman Ralph Abraham made the announcement. He says crawfishermen were slammed by having the pandemic shut the country down during their peak spring season.

The PAC 12 and Big Ten have suspended fall sports but the SEC, ACC and Big 12 are still planning on holding its season. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey says the SEC plans on further refining its policies to promote a safe return to play while monitoring the situation. USA Today sports writer Glenn Guilbeau says don’t expect any SEC decision to be made imminently.

Investigators with State Police are looking into an officer-involved shooting that put a burglary suspect in the hospital.  Shortly after 5 on Tuesday morning, Lafayette Police responded to a complaint of a burglary.  Trooper Thomas Gossen says when officers arrived, they made contact with the subject.

No officers were injured and the suspect is in stable condition.

The Athletic’s Jeff Duncan reports Saints officials met with Governor Edwards and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell to discuss plans for fans to attend Saints games this year. Duncan says the state will need to move into Phase three in order to have limited seating in the Dome. Currently the state is set to remain phase two through August 28th, the season opener is September 13th.

Shreveport Police are looking for a 41-year-old man who shot another person at St. Mary Medical Center, which is run by Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport. Authorities say Taniel Cole shot another person in the leg this morning and then fled the scene. No word on what sparked the shooting.

The investigation continues into Tuesday morning’s officer-involved shooting involving the Lafayette Police Department. State Police say a burglary suspect was shot during a struggle with a Lafayette officer when the cop tried to arrest the subject. Trooper Thomas Gossen says it’s too early to tell how things escalated to the point of gunfire…

Louisiana reported 26 more COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday increasing the state’s death toll to 4,195. But the number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital dropped by 47 for a total number of 1,335. The state also reported 11-hundred new cases on Tuesday.

SEC Commissioner Greg Sanky has responded to the moves by the BIG Ten and PAC-12 and says he is looking to learn more about the factors that lead to their decisions, but says he remains comfortable with the SEC’s approach to supporting a healthy environment for student athletes. He adds the conference will continue to further refine it’s policies and protocols for a safe return to sports.

Hurricane experts are calling for an active season of storm activity and with that prediction, Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon is stressing the importance of proper coverage. Donelon says flood, homeowner, and commercial property insurances can still be obtained now, but only while a storm is not in the Gulf. Flood insurance will take 30 days to take effect after your first premium payment.Donelon says documentation of property is vital to expediting insurance claims.

Federally enhanced unemployment benefits are expected to begin shipping again in a few weeks, this time at 300 dollars on top of state payments instead of the previous 600 dollars. There’s a requirement that states pay at least 100 dollars in state benefits to unlock the extra 300. Senator Bill Cassidy says Louisiana’s unemployed qualify under that requirement.

The Big Ten and PAC 12 become the first two Power Five conferences to announce they are suspending fall college sports, with an eye towards potentially picking them back up in spring, but SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey told Dan Patrick today that their medical team cleared the SEC to play. A decision on the fate of the NCAA’s most prominent conference is not expected to be made imminently.

The cancellations have led to a number of players, coaches, and administrators speaking out in favor of continuing with fall sports, including one Joe Burrow who tweeted that if the season had been canceled last year he might be out looking for a job instead of getting drafted first overall. Burrow was considered a late-round pick heading into the 2019 season.
