The Houma Police Department is investigating the fatal shooting of an 8-year-old girl while riding in a vehicle. Detectives say a light-colored vehicle was following a dark-colored vehicle and shooting at it in the 91-hundred block of Main Street last night. Authorities say after shots were fired, the victims drove to a hospital where the little girl was pronounced dead.

Flash flood watches are posted for much of south Louisiana and State Climatologist Barry Keim says there’s also a marginal risk for severe weather for most of south Louisiana and a portion of central Louisiana..,

US health officials are questioning the results of AstraZeneca’s vaccine trial. The company says its vaccine is 79-percent effective at preventing COVID-19 but the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says Astrazeneca may have used outdated and incomplete information. Tulane School of Medicine Professor Doctor Lisa Morici says the U-S may send Astra Zeneca doses to other countries…

But Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says actuarial data shows females are a greater risk behind the wheel, which is why they have a higher premium.

The Oregon State Board of Trustees holds another meeting today to discuss the future of their president and former LSU leader F- King Alexander. During testimony last week, Alexander blamed the LSU Board of Supervisors for acting as a roadblock when it came to disciplining as he discussed LSU’s failure to properly handle sexual misconduct cases. The LSU Board has called Alexander’s comments arrogant and condescending.

One argument is that those who are recently widowed start driving more. But Luneau says that narrative is false.

Louisiana has surpassed ten-thousand COVID-19 deaths, reaching the grim milestone just over a year from when the state reported its first COVID death. AstraZeneca’s clinical trial shows the company’s two-shot COVID-19 vaccine has an efficacy rate of 79 percent in the US. The use of AZ’s vaccine in Europe was temporarily halted on fears it was leading to incidents of blood clotting. Tulane School of Medicine Professor Doctor Lisa Morici says the data did not support that decision.

In better news the state’s vaccination campaign hit a notable milestone today, over a million Louisianans have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine and over 600,000 have completed their full vaccine series. The New Orleans region leads the state with 15 percent of its population vaccinated.

It’s a nice day today, but get ready for some wet weather starting tomorrow. A flash flood watch is in effect for southeast Louisiana from Tuesday morning through Thursday night. Christopher Bannon with the National Weather Service in New Orleans says multiple rounds of moderate to heavy rain are expected across and the area. He says flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas is possible with localized flash flooding…

Saturday saw two big Congressional special elections in the state. In the 5^th Julia Letlow won resoundingly and will avoid a runoff while the 2^nd sees New Orleans State Senator Karen Carter Peterson and Troy Carter facing off April 24^th. JMC Analytics Publisher John Couvillon says the 16 percent of voters who voted for Republicans could be key to Carter, the more centrist candidate in the race.

There have been upsets galore in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament and LSU will try to pull off another one tonight as the eighth-seeded Tigers face top-seeded Michigan at 6:10. The Wolverines have a big front line led by seven-foot-one freshman Hunter Dickinson. Darius Days leads LSU in double-doubles and says rebounding will be critical tonight…

The Pelicans are off tonight after picking up a five-point win at Denver yesterday. Tomorrow, the Pels will host the Lakers, who are without LeBron James and Anthony Davis because of injuries.

The Saints will not raise season ticket prices in 2021 and the league announces they will have prospects and fans in attendance for the NFL draft in Cleveland.

After dropping two of three to Mississippi State this past weekend, the LSU baseball team fell three more spots to number 22 in the latest D-1 baseball poll. Weather permitting, the Tigers will visit Tulane tomorrow. The Green Wave were swept by Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs have won five in a row and they’ve landed in the D-1 baseball poll as they are ranked 23rd.

La Tech junior left-hander Jonathan Fincher was named co-Conference USA Pitcher of the Week after throwing a complete game, one-hit shutout against the Green Wave on Friday. Fincher lowered his ERA to 1.50.

Northwestern State sophomore right-hander Levi David has been named Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week. He struck out a career-high 12 Sam Houson batters in a win on Saturday.

The Demons are 4-and-4 in the Southland and in the middle of the pack of the conference standings. McNeese leads the league with a 6-and-1 conference record, followed by UNO and Nicholls who are both six and two.

As of today’s Department of Health update, more than 10,000 Louisianans are reported to have died from COVID-19. Early on in the pandemic, there was widespread misinformation calling COVID-19 no worse than the common flu. Governor Edwards says that’s been completely debunked.

But on the bright side, today Louisiana crossed the one million mark for people who’ve received at least one vaccine dose.

Carter secured 36 percent and Peterson won 23 percent while Baton Rouge activist Gary Chambers surprised many by nearly upsetting Peterson and winning 21 percent. But there won’t be a runoff in the 5^th district after Julia Letlow won outright Saturday with 65 percent of the vote. The seat was previously won by her husband Luke Letlow, who passed away from COVID in December before being sworn in…

Over 10,000 Louisianans are now believed to have died from COVID-19 as of today’s Department of Health report. The first reported COVID-19 death in Louisiana occurred on March 14^th, 2020. Governor Edwards says it’s a grim reminder of just how deadly the pandemic has been.

The special election for the 5^th Congressional District is over with Julia Letlow cruising to a 65 percent win. Letlow ran after her husband, who was set to become the district’s next congressman, died of COVID-19. One of Letlow’s opponents ran for the seat out of concern she wouldn’t have time for her two young children. Letlow says women have been juggling for centuries and she’s just following the lead of other women who have gone before her.
