Tropical Storm Fred appears headed for the Florida Panhandle, but the Louisiana/Mississippi Line remains at the edges of the system’s cone of uncertainty. State Climatologist Barry Keim says Fred is likely to lose tropical storm status sometime today as it crosses the mountains in Hispaniola.

A shooting Sunday in Winnsboro has a 13-year-old girl fighting for her life and her mother facing charges. Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb says Lachandra Jones was arguing with her daughter when the gun went off.

The victim was airlifted to LSU Shreveport and is listed in critical condition.  Jones is charged with second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and illegal use of a weapon and is held on a $255-thousand bond.

LSU’s home opener is a month away and Director of Strategic Media for LSU Athletics Cody Worsham says despite the rise in Covid cases they are still a go for 100-percent capacity. Last season the football team was impacted by Covid-19 numerous times, but Worsham says the program has done a great job of getting players and coaches vaccinated.

Scammers are now using eviction scare tactics to steal from victims. President of the Better Business Bureau of South-Central Louisiana Carmen Million says she hears of scams daily that use a current situation, like the pandemic to prey on their next victim. Million says anyone is game and never assume you won’t be a victim.

Despite the massive uptick in COVID cases this month plans are still on for 100 percent capacity at Tiger Stadium a month from now for the home opener. Director of Strategic Media for LSU Athletics Cody Worsham says the school will still obey any protocols in order to keep fans safe.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Tropical Storm Fred won’t be nearing Louisiana, instead heading to Florida Monday. It’s been a quiet hurricane season in the Gulf so far but State Climatologist Barry Keim says the Saharan Dust Layer has lifted and we should expect things to get a lot more active in the coming weeks.

A  mom shot her daughter in the head in Winnsboro, allegedly after pointing gun at her that she says she didn’t know was loaded. Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb says Lachandra Jones was arguing with her 13 year old daughter outside of a rental home that Jones owned.

President of the Better Business Bureau of South-Central Louisiana Carmen Million is warning residents about scams related to the eviction moratorium. She says scammers are attempting to get people’s personal information by impersonating government officials.

Coastal southeast Louisiana is on the edge of the cone of uncertainty for Tropical Storm Fred, as the official forecast track has the storm making landfall along the Florida panhandle. Matt Doyle has the story.

The state reports another 54-hundred new COVID cases today along with 55 additional COVID-related deaths. COVID Hospitalizations are just below 29 hundred as the 4^th surge of the pandemic continues. Today it was announced that a seventh member of Governor Edwards staff tested positive for COVID, the staff member is reportedly working off-site and no other employees were exposed.

With the start of LSU’s 2021 football season less than a month away, the Tigers are preparing for a bounce-back season after a crazy 2020.  Director of Strategic Media for LSU Athletics Cody Worsham says despite the rise in Covid cases, the school is preparing for 100 percent capacity in Tiger Stadium.

The eviction moratorium might have been extended until October third, but scammers are reportedly still taking advantage of the situation to prey on victims. Fred is expected to drop below tropical storm strength today but strengthen tomorrow as it approaches Cuba.

A Winnsboro mom allegedly shot her daughter in the head during an argument over the weekend. Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb says Lachandra Jones alleges she did not know the gun had a bullet in the chamber when she pointed it at her daughter during the dispute.

Louisiana reports another 5,400 COVID cases today along with 55 additional COVID-related deaths as this 4^th surge of the pandemic continues to burn through the entire state. The rate of new hospitalizations appears to be slowing, but we still did add to the count putting the state just below 2,900. 

A number of LSU players were missing during the portion of the practice viewed by the media. Standout cornerbacks Derek Stingley Junior and Eli Ricks were among those not present. Coach Ed Orgeron says running back Tyrion Davis-Price is dealing with a minor injury, a timetable for his return is unknown at this time.

LSU is ranked 13th and U-L Lafayette is ranked 23rd in the preseason coaches poll which was released yesterday. Alabama is ranked number one ahead of Clemson, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Georgia.  ULL’s Sun Belt rival Coastal Carolina comes in one spot behind the Cajuns at 24.

Patrick Robinson was competing for a starting spot at cornerback with the Saints but has now announced his retirement from the NFL after 11 seasons in the league, a number of them with New Orleans. The Saints were already thin at corner and this is another blow to the position.

With a lack of depth at the position there are reports that the Saints could be interested in a potential trade involving Jaguars cornerback CJ Henderson.  Henderson is a former first-round pick from the University of Florida.

The state of Louisiana has a number of highly ranked quarterbacks and one that is highly recruited is Arch Manning, the son of Cooper Manning, nephew of Peyton and Eli, and grandson to Archie Manning.  Arch has the ability to run and he says it’s a necessity this day and age.

Manning’s top target in receiver AJ Johnson has left the school and transferred to Cardinal Newman high school in Florida.  Johnson is a four-star recruit according to 247Sports.

Despite the rising number of cases and COVID hospitalizations, even among younger people, the LHSAA said in a memo that it’s confident schools can work with local health officials so the fall season can happen. Also, the memo says if a game is canceled because of COVID, it will go down as a forfeit for the team who does not have enough healthy players.

The Franklin Parish Sheriff’s Office has arrested a woman for the alleged shooting of her 13-year-old daughter. The FPSO says they received a report of a self-inflicted gunshot wound from the hospital of a juvenile, but an investigation revealed her mother Lachandra Jones was allegedly responsible.  Jones was arrested in Alexandra for second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and illegal use of weapons.

An International Panel on Climate Change report shows without achieving worldwide carbon neutrally by mid-century average temps in Louisiana’s region will rise six degrees or more. Tulane Chair of Earth and Environmental Sciences Cynthia Ebinger says the technology already exists to avoid the worst-case scenarios outlined, but governments need to do a better job of incentivizing its use.

Tropical Storm Fred formed last night and is just south of the eastern Dominican Republic with maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour. Louisiana is outside of the cone of uncertainty for Fred and the storm is expected to make landfall early Monday morning as a tropical storm along the Florida panhandle.
