Three people were fatally injured in an early morning car crash during a multi-parish police pursuit in Pointe Coupee Parish this morning. Authorities say a pursuit in West Baton Rouge Parish crossed over into Pointe Coupee parish and for unknown reasons the vehicle hit a tree on Fordoche Road (Hwy. 77). The identity of the victims is unknown.

State officials will break ground on the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion in Belle Chase today. The project will restore the west bank of the Mississippi River by connecting Barataria Bay to the Mississippi River and rebuilding thousands of acres of coastal wetlands. Bren Haase, Executive Assistant to the governor for coastal activities, says they’ve been discussing this project for decades…

Landry has a big lead in the polls and the endorsement of the state Republican Party. Several Republicans have criticized. But Landry says he’s receiving this support because of his work as the Attorney General the last eight years…

Governor Edwards has directed the state pardon board to grant clemency to 56 of the state’s 57 death row inmates. Last month, the pardon board declined to hear the cases after receiving a legal opinion from Attorney General Jeff Landry who said they would violate their own rules if they heard them. But Edwards says that would not be the case. So can the clemency applications be considered before Edwards leaves office on January 8th. Attorney Cecelia Kappel who represents several of the death row inmates says yes…

Last month, the panel decided not to take them up, on the grounds they were not filed within a year after the inmates’ final appeal was denied. But Executive Director of the Capital Appeals Project, Cecelia Kappel says the board has heard cases outside of the one year window before…

Republican candidate, Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt qualified for the governor’s race today. After qualifying, reporters asked about her stance on abortion. The state lawmaker says she’s pro-life, but seemed open to allowing for more exceptions in the state’s near-total abortion ban….

Hewitt is the fourth main candidate to qualify for governor. Landry qualifies this afternoon and tomorrow Republicans Stephen Waguespack and Richard Nelson will qualify.

A bite from a Lone Star tick can cause people to have a red meat allergy. Dr. James Diaz with LSU Health New Orleans says the tick can transmit chemicals from animals they feed on and one of those chemicals is Alpha-gal.

He says in the US it’s spread by a Lone Star tick, which has a white spot on its back, that feeds predominately on White Tail Deer.

Louisiana Department of Health has released the first round of bonus payments to over 15 thousand direct support workers for serving waiver patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. LDH Assistant Secretary Julie Foster Hagen says they will check for additional eligible workers after running reports for June and July. She says these bonuses are to retain workers for their dedication and services to vulnerable residents in the state during the pandemic

DSW workers payments will be disbursed directly from the provider agency. And self-direct workers will get paid through a fiscal agent.

Governor John Bel Edwards has asked the Pardon Board to hear the 56 cases from death row inmates seeking clemency. The Board refused to hear the cases, stating rules the cases had to be filed within a year of their last appeal ruling. The cases were filed after Governor Edwards stated he opposes the death penalty.

The Saints are continuing fall training camp sessions, but the schedule has slightly changed for tomorrow’s portion. The last open portion of fall camp was scheduled for Thursday August 10th but it has been cancelled due to the extreme heat. Coach Dennis Allen says this about practicing in the heat and if they will continue to in the future.

The Saints drafted defensive tackle Bryan Bressee in the first round of the 2023 draft and Isiah Foskey out of Notre Dame and the second round to beef up the defensive line. Allen says that he has seen production from the group as a whole in the practices so far.

LSU football had an off day today, but will practice on Thursday through Saturday. The team has plenty of running backs on the roster for the new season and Coach Brian Kelly says how he thinks the group will work itself out for the season.

Louisiana Tech is tweaking their mascot name for their women’s sports. All sports besides women’s basketball will now be referred to as the Bulldogs. The women’s basketball team will continue to be called the Lady Techsters. Athletic director and vice president Eric A Wood said that “The Lady Techseters nickname and script logo is a national brand synonymous with our women’s basketball program. Lady Techsters will now only belong to them.”

Edwards’s announcement comes after the Pardon Board returned the applications citing they would violate their own rules to hear them within a year of their final approval. Earlier this year inmates on death row flooded the Pardon Board with requests. Prosecutors statewide have come out against clearing the state’s death row. Only two clemency requests have been granted since the death penalty was instated in the 1970s.

Several coastal parishes have filed lawsuits against oil companies, claiming they’ve contributed to coastal land loss. Hewitt is one of seven major candidates in the race.

And Governor Edwards has sent a letter to the Pardon Board, asking them to hear the 56 cases from death row inmates seeking to have their sentences commuted to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Board opted not to hear the cases on the grounds they were not filed within a year of the inmate’s final appeal. Edwards who is in the last year of his term stated early this year he opposes the death penalty.

The state health department releases the first round of bonus payments to over 15 thousand direct support workers statewide who served waiver participants during the pandemic. LDH Assistant Secretary Julie Foster Hagen says the bonuses are to retain workers for their dedication and services to vulnerable residents in the state during the pandemic.
